Day Two: Monday
(Day Three at bottom of this page)

Today we had our first workday. Right before breakfast we found out that we would be working with Harrison again this year. Harrison is the HOMES expert in concrete and he was a joy to work with last year. And we did do concrete – about a four-foot by four-foot square at the base of the stairs to the house. Hand mixed by Todd, Dave, Kaitlyn and Megan. The remainder of us were playing with rocks (and a puppy!).

Our primary focus at the site was landscaping. The home that we worked on is on a foundation about sixteen feet high in the flood plain. Their old home had been torn down, and we needed to level the area, remove the largest rocks then seed, fertilize and lay straw on the yard. In addition, the old concrete stairs were still in the yard, so about half the group took turns with the sledgehammers breaking them down into moveable pieces.

We were about an hour and 20 minutes away from Neon. It was a very hot day today. We took plenty of breaks, and drank a lot of water. Lunch and dinner were delicious – made particularly so by the hunger that comes with hard work.

God Bless and keep praying for good weather and safe keeping of all of our crew.

Day Three: Tuesday

Today we split into two groups to go to sites that didn’t need 12 people. Six of us went back to yesterday’s house to move gravel, creating a driveway and filling some low spots with poor drainage.

OK, so it was rocks again. Or supposed to be. Bringing back reminders of waiting for trucks last year, the power steering on the gravel truck blew a bad leak and Harrison was unable to bring the gravel out. That group installed a vanity in the bathroom plus a few other odd jobs, and spent a lot of time with the puppy and the little girl who lived in the home.

The other group went out to a home nearer to our center, only about 20 minutes away. This job was some repair and adding a deck / stairs to a trailer home. The old deck had been torn off. We worked with Johnny on this job to build the decking and the stairs. Hard wood, soft nails, we were all having a bit of a time nailing the deck to the trailer frame, and bending and unbending nails, --but we got it done.

This evening we went into Whitesburg to hear Dock Frasier and Clyde Stanley, who told us “
true stories” of the Appalachian area in story and song. We enjoyed it thoroughly and stopped for ice cream on the way home.

God Bless and keep us in your prayers.
